About Geelong2Uganda

Why Uganda?

Inspired by the documentary movie, 'Invisible children' (2006) which depicts the suffering of orphaned and vulnerable children in Northern Uganda, a group of Geelong women were moved with compassion to act.  From this grew the desire to give more than just words of support or money, we wanted to take action and make a difference - so Geelong2Uganda was birthed.

Our team, now a diverse group of men and women from all walks of life, discovered the organisation Operation Uganda working in the slums of Kampala, the Ugandan Capital.  Operation Uganda was founded by Australians Russell and Jenny Barton and together with their 4 children they began Jordan House Children's Home in 2004.  Now with hundreds of children's lives being transformed through orphan care and community programs they are impacting their local community.  The cycle of poverty is being broken through educating children, providing nutritious meals, training and empowering women in skill based courses and being a beacon of hope to the slum community of Kasubi.  Households are sustained, dignity is restored and hope returns.

Who are we?

Geelong2Uganda is a not-for-profit unincorporated organisation.  We are self-funded Geelong-based volunteers, men and women, young and old, many with backgrounds in health, education and trades who believe that rescuing a child from poverty, hunger and disease can be done – one life at a time.  We fundraise on behalf of and with authority from Operation Uganda.  In April 2009 the team made their first trip to the slums of Kampala to complete projects that assisted and supported the work of Operation Uganda.  The team was deeply moved by what they saw, the projects they participated in and the relationships they built, which has spurred them on to continue in this work.
